Julie and I have both been resisting buying a window AC unit. We feel that they’re bad for the environment and it really isn’t hot enough to merit needing one. As it is we have 2 big box fans (one in the bedroom and one in the living room) and a small desk fan on my bedside table. Despite a few hot nights, we’re generally quite comfortable.

I’ve lived without air conditioners my entire life. There will be a few pretty bad nights each summer but I’ve gotten along quite well with just a fan. One of the big draws of the new apartment is the ceiling fan in the living room. It cools off the entire place. I am considering a dehumidifier for those disgustingly muggy Chicago summers (I say this every year and never end up buying one).
