books are better than boys

I like bicycles, beer, and books.
Some other things I like.

things that I drank that I loved

(Philadelphia edition)

  • Manayunk Biere de Mars
  • Brew Free or Die IPA
  • Jolly Pumpkin Madrugada Obscura
  • Sly Fox Route 113 IPA
  • Troegs Hopback (cask)
  • Victory Storm King Imperial Stout
  • Russian River Consecration
  • Duchesse de Bourgogne
  • Dirty gin martini
  • Tecate Michelada
  • Rosé, unknown brand
  • Iced americano, from Ultimo (these kids really know their coffee)
  • Arnold Palmer

Despite the length and content of most of this list, I was not drunk the entire time. I also had the sicilian pizza from FrancoLuigi’s (the best ever), played Catch Phrase! so hard that we broke the game, saw my friend’s dream catcher wall (this friend), walked all over the city, pretended it was the middle of summer (90° in Philly yesterday), and even found some time to go on a job interview. I’d call it a rousing success.

Knowing that you get to go into work two hours late but still getting up seven am means that you can go for a run, take a long shower, make breakfast and leisurely drink coffee while trying to finish reading for book club, and still get out of the house with plenty of time to spare.
From my days at Dutch Wonderland on, I’ve always loved the 11-7 shift more than any other. But today I’m the lucky gal who gets to come in at 11 and leave at 5.

excellent weekend, pt 1.*

Friday night:

Nails painted.**
Dinner and a movie (True Grit) with a good friend.

Go to bed at a reasonable hour. Getting eight hours of sleep is so fun! And cool!

Saturday Morning:

Get up early and go for a run. It’s snowing and that’s pretty. Most of the city is still sleeping.

Shower. Make coffee.

Make pancakes from “just add water” pancake mix. Add vanilla extract and oatmeal. It makes them fancy and extra-good.

Prepare one egg. The first time I’ve successfully made one over easy. Hurrah! I forgot to photograph it, I was so excited. This is what it looked like before.

Sit down to breakfast with a good book.

After breakfast, wash the dishes (because I’m a responsible adult). While cleaning up find out that the littlest, Dommel decided to show his precious face today at 10:41am. Can’t wait to meet you, Emry Jack Josiah!

And all of this before noon on Saturday.

*I am predicting that the second half the the weekend will be just as good.

**Someone asked where the nail polish is from. I got it from Charlotte Russe, but I’m not sure what the color is called, and I can’t find it on their website anymore.

Thursday. Coffee and cleaning.
Now I’m just sitting in a reasonably tidy apartment and trying to decide if I should wear lipstick1 on my date tonight.

lazy sunday

Meandering bike ride to the grocery store to buy ingredients for:

French press coffee in my “DEBBIE” mug.

Making muffins from scratch for the very first time.  Naomi’s Quinoa Muffin recipe found on 3191 Miles Apart.  (Muffins are so easy to make.  You should try it.)

The finished product.  I think they’re pretty great.  And C gave them a thumbs up as well.

I also made this recipe for bulgur veggie burgers.  They are quite crumbly, even though I added an egg to try to bind them, but still good.

Now I’m going to watch the Parks and Recreation from Thursday, and consider doing a little studying.

"cold drinks hot staff"I’m going to guess that this was taken outside Last Drop Coffee House.  I didn’t get a chance to stop by last time I was in town, but I went there all the time when I lived in Philadelphia and I distinctly remember that a large part of the reason was the hot staff (and customers).  Good coffee and vibes didn’t hurt either.
