Kate and I are making english muffins tomorrow afternoon and I can’t explain how excited I am about this. English muffins are one of the best bread products out there. And homemade anything is almost universally at least 10 times better than store-bought. So, with any luck we’ll have english muffins so delicious that they give you good hair days, excellent parking mojo, and cure hangnails. Or something like that.

This is the email I sent to coordinate ingredient procurement:

I have the flour, yeast, sugar, and salt for the recipe if you need me to bring over any/all let me know. I don’t have shortening or milk, but can certainly find some specialty, organic, fare-trade grocery store that may have these rare commodities.

(I obviously think I’m pretty clever.)

Weekend projects:

1. My first attempt at making a wallet. I’ll upgrade to leather when I get it just right. Also, my sewing machine was not made for pleather. It was rough going, as you can see from the horrible stitching.

2. I got a new computer this week so I needed to make a new laptop sleeve. Not too shabby for making it in about an hour, sans pattern.

This weekend was oh so quiet. I didn’t go out at all on Friday or Saturday night and I can’t remember the last time that happened. I stayed in, watched My Man Godfrey and Sullivan’s Travels (my goodness - don’t Veronica Lake and Joel McCrea make just about the most attractive couple ever?), started reading The Virgin Suicides, drank coffee, finally got my sewing machine out of our storage room/pantry to make the shirt above, and just so you don’t think I’m completely lame - I did make the trek down to Bridgeport to finally check out Maria’s and decided that black lagers are my choice drink for fall.
(Additional note: Why yes, that is a First Lady by Belvedere hair salon drying chair. And yes, it does work. If you’re all like, my hair is so wet! I need to get it dry and I don’t even want to stand right now, or hold a blow dryer, then I can help you out.)

I’ve been sewing like a mad woman lately. Above are four new tank tops for summer*. There are also patterns for two new dresses already cut that I hope to get to this week. Now, if I could just focus this energy and attention on things that have deadlines looming._________________________________
*Did you hear, it’s supposed to be in the eighties in Chicago today…warm weather at last. Oh snap jawn!
The patterns - both are quick and simple, perfect for beginners, or those with little patience like me.Wiksten tank top + dress patternGrainline tiny pocket tank
