Your proposal is impressive. I have suggested some minor corrections…

The head of my thesis committee on the first draft proposal I turned in last week.

It took me long enough to get on the ball with this, but still…killing it!

Tomorrow I’m headed to New York for the Association of American Geographers annual meeting. Pretty psyched about hangin’ with a bunch of geographers and if one night we get a wee bit tipsy and start toasting to Tobler’s Law*, I’m not complaining. Now, all I need to do is pack.________________________________

I like to celebrate the birth of the baby jesus by reading about GIS tools for accessibility analysis in urban transportation modes and holistic approaches to cycle network planning while eating delicious, homemade moroccan pot pie and drinking a bomber of Ragnarok.

I am so loopy from my cold medicine. I’ve been reading/staring at this article on exposure to particulate matter in traffic comparing cyclists and car passengers for, like, an hour (I really have no clue though). Maybe working on my lit review while jacked on medicine wasn’t the best idea.

But seriously, it’s pretty effed up that bicyclists are exposed to significantly greater amounts of vehicle exhaust than the drivers creating it. Right?

'It' being my ass.The ‘fire’ being AAG.See, I just submitted an abstract for the annual conference in February and I still need to do the research and write the paper (aka my thesis*). Having known myself for over thirty years, I know very well that without a firm deadline I have a lot of trouble getting things done. I sincerely hope that the fire that is AAG will get my ass to complete the final step in me becoming a ‘master’ of geography (and environmental studies). Also, if you see me around town please ask me how my thesis is going. If I don’t have a good answer or I cringe at the question then you have my permission to publicly reprimand me.

*But I have put in a lot of work already. I’ve done the reading - my two four-inch binders full of highlighted journal articles and stacks of notes could tell you that - and I’ve written my proposal (well, most of it) so don’t think I’m a total slacker.

Q
I remember you talking about census data a while back — being excited for it. Is that for work or personal consumption?
A

Unfortunately it’s not for work (hopefully it will be in the future), it’s for school. I’m getting my masters in Geography & Environmental Studies, and I have a certificate in GIS. So I’m pretty excited to work with more current demographic data.

I’ll be using the new info for maps/research for a presentation I’m giving at AAG in April and for my thesis.

The 2010 US Census is rolling out data state by state through March. Pretty exciting stuff, no?

Instead of going online and finding more books that I would like to read this year, I should really be working on Swann’s Way for book club or reading for my thesis (for which I have just barely started writing my proposal - if I were going to have a real New Year’s resolution it should be to get on that.)
